Ryan nodded, watching her reaction and while she cooled down a little bit, she still had her hand ready on her wand. He knew he must choose his next words carefully if he were to play this right. Ryan figured he wouldn't have her trust him completely in one night, that would be too lucky, and he wasn't about to Imperius her to murder her mum... but Ryan was on a good start. He wouldn't mess this up.
"I know how that is," he said quietly. "I have to deny Ava as my sister, almost. I have to act completely opposite of her, maybe that will get them to see I'm not like her, that I won't follow in her bloody footsteps. I hear the whispers, the questions everyone asks each other but never me. Everyone stares but scurries off when I look back, afraid of me." His anger was flaring now; his voice was the same quiet tone but the tension and frustration in his voice were obvious.
Ryan had always been the strong, silent type with an air of mystery about him, but since Ava's death and the announcement of it in the Daily Prophet, he had become even more withdrawn. Ava was the loud, boisterous, bragging one. She was the one who wasn't afraid to hex another student for laughs, especially students in other Houses. Ryan was trying to clear his name by not being like her in any way.
"She was my best friend when we were kids, and now I hate her for ruining my life. The Vogel name will never be trusted. I will never be trusted." He had his back against the wall now, and was staring at his hands in his lap.
"And you... having to hide everything. You can't be yourself either. You're brilliant, but can't show it. Everything becomes a secret when someone in your family is a Death Eater, whether its suspected or known. I hate it too." He folded his arms and continued to look down.
