Malfoy's pride themselves on their pale complexion. Their milky white skin is a sign of their arisocratic line, their noble blood, all that crap. So summer was usually a sad season of dodging sunlight and keeping indoors as much as possible. This summer Draco seemed to be having little difficulty keeping himself shut away. Being on the run from the Order of the Phoenix, the Ministry and keeping out of Voldemort's way meant his summer so far had consisted of three weeks shut up in Snape's house reading potions books. Now that he'd expended each of the encyclopedias of brews and mixtures that littered Snape's house, he'd found himself rather bored.
And frustraited.
And worst of all, he was lonely. The only comfort he had found were the books, and so Snape had suggested that Draco start teaching himself practically.
That was possibly Severus' first mistake.
Because Draco was a determined young man. And since he'd royally buggered up with the Hogwarts fiasco, he found it impertinant that he was able to stand on his own two feet. He wanted out. And he knew that if he was going to leave the service o the Death Eaters and keep out of Azkaban, that would mean being strong and smart. Naturally, being a Slytherin, a little bit of cunning came in the equation too.
The potion he needed to brew as soon as physically possible consisted of several very difficult-to-find ingredients, three of which were illegal for persons not in the Healing profession and one of which was only found in Greenland. Draco was not happy about this fact. And so he was here, sculking around Knockturn with his pockets full of stolen gold and other goods to trade, plus his list of ingredients.
Severus' second mistake was letting Draco have an owl. Draco had been conversing with two traders already. They had half the things he needed but demanded cash.
Severus' third mistake was going away for the week on 'business' - which no doubt involved Unforgivable curses and bloodshed - and telling Draco not to leave the house. Malfoy's didnt follow the orders of common blooded creatures.
The blonde boy stood half in shadow at the corner of Darkwater Row, an alley leading off Knockturn; he checked his watch and waited for his first correspondant to arrive.
